Have you heard about The Great Trail? There is a chance that you may have hiked sections of it before, perhaps you know it as the Trans Canada Trail. It’s 22,000 km (13,670 mi) of trail that crosses all 13 provinces and territories, through urban, rural and wilderness landscapes, and follows green-ways, waterways and roadways. What began in 1992 as a big dream of a few Canadians is now coming to life.
The Grand Portage
Needless to say we were pretty excited and honoured to meet up with the Hudson’s Bay crew, as they stopped in on the West Coast at the start of their 66 day Grand Portage tour. Wait, but what is the Grand Portage and what does this have to do with The Great Trail?
Hudson’s Bay has sent a team of 3 adventurers to travel the width of Canada alongside the Great Trail to help raise awareness and have committed to raising $1,000.000.00 to help connect the longest recreational trail in the world.
They will be adventuring and exploring across Canada as a way to celebrate the thousands of volunteers who have brought this trail to life. All the while encouraging every single Canadian to get out on the trails, get paddling and discovering everything this big beautiful country has to offer.
During their brief stop on the West Coast we got to opportunity to paddle in their beautiful signature Hudson’s Bay canoes at Alice Lake, went on a trail run and enjoyed a delicious campfire dinner. There really isn’t anything more Canadian than that!
This summer, the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation, and the up and coming connection of The Great Trail is a fantastic reason to celebrate this wild land we all get to call home. Celebrate by getting outside, exploring and find a little slice of the Great Trail near you. You can also support the cause directly by making a donation online or purchasing a piece from the HB Grand Portage signature collection at hbgrandportage.ca.
